Tra-la, 'tis spring

I managed to get out on my first long bike ride of the year at the weekend (despite all my best intentions, I rarely get further afield than the shops and the library during the winter). Our route took us through the pretty village of Brent Eleigh, where the bank outside the church was thick with primroses and dog violets.

The village also sports this rather handsome village sign, which appears to feature a knight in shining armour with a pigeon on his head, apparently being barbecued. I have no idea what its significance might be. The 'Brent' in the village name means 'burned', which would explain the flames, but what's with the knight and the pigeon? "Frying to-Knight", maybe? Knight and pigeon pie? Is there a legend that the village seigneur once annoyed the patron saint of pigeons and this represents him getting his just deserts? Anyone care to hazard a guess?

I am so jealous of your lovely weather. It is supposedly spring here as well but it as been cold (daytime high's in the 30-40's, about 25 degrees below normal) and it has been spitting snow the last few days. The weather folks are saying we could get 1-2 inches of snow tomorrow!

It's about 26 degrees here - Celsius! That's about 80 degrees Fahrenheit, I think - it's wonderful. We seem to have skipped spring and gone directly to summer.

I'm afraid I can't even begin to guess the significance of the knight and pigeon!

That village sign is great! Thanks for sharing. :)

We have snow on the ground, buds on the lilacs, and a lawn that needs mowing. Since its hard to mow in teh snow, I'll ignore it another month. Of course, by then I may have to borrow some horses to shorten the grass...

Daphne/Alianore - bear in mind that it's a self-selecting sample, if the weather's miserable I don't go out and take photos, so you only see the nice days :-)

Constance - an acquaintance of mine borrows sheep to do the same job. He was delighted to find that instead of having to pay somebody to mow the paddock that came with his house he could get the local farmer to put a few sheep on it for free :-)

Gabriele - I daily bless whoever it was that invented cetirizine :-) But sometimes in high summer in the lowlands I just have to give in and stay indoors all day.

Bernita - that's as good an explanation as any and better than the ones I could come up with :-)
